DKYLB.com, Wednesday (25/10/2023) -Luanda, Angola.
Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Fadli Zon was elected unanimously as member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) representing the Asia Pacific Geo-Political Group together with Milton Dick, Speaker of Parliament of Australia.
Mr. Zon's nomination was approved by all participants at the Asia Pacific Group (APG) session in the series of the 147th IPU General Assembly in Luanda, Angola, Monday, 23 October 2023.
The meeting was chaired by the Speaker of the Parliament of Australia, Milton Dick, who currently serves as the Chair of Asia Pacific Group.
Fadli Zon's nomination as Member of the Executive Committee was previously discussed at the ASEAN+3 Session, a forum where ASEAN member states sit together with Japan, China, and Korea.
At the meeting, the meeting participants agreed to support the candidacy of the Gerindra Party politician together with Milton Dick.
The Chairperson of BKSAP has had a long history of collaboration with the IPU.
The Deputy Chair of the Gerindra Party Central Board is also a Member of the IPU Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, holding the office until March 2025.
Currently, the member of Indonesian House Commission I on foreign affairs also serves as a member of the IPU Task Force for the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
At the IPU, the Executive Committee is one of the highest organs within the organization with the authority to deliberate various issues at IPU sessions.
The election of Indonesia as a member of the Executive Committee increases the number of Asia Pacific representation in the IPU along with India and Australia.
This, in turn, will provide an opportunity for Indonesia to contribute more to world parliamentary agendas while also voicing various issues of its national interest in the global forum.
Apart from the election of Executive Members, the APG Session also discussed several crucial issues.
On that occasion, the Indonesia delegation presented a draft emergency item to address the humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
As part of the endeavors to build solidarity with Palestine, Indonesia proposed an emergency item entitled Ending Aggression and Forging Solidarity to Alleviate Humanitarian Crises in Gaza.
In the proposal, the Indonesian House calls for three items of call for action: the importance of putting an immediate end to the Israeli attacks, opening humanitarian access to Gaza, and opening negotiations to achieve peace for Palestine.
